C&L Pearce are a small builders with a joinery workshop in Frome. They specialise in the renovation and restoration of old and listed buildings.
This project saw the conversion of an old farm piggery into a residential home. Work spanned over 18 months, with the design following the original contours of the building. The roof in particular retained its flat shape and overhang.
Now a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home, the old piggery has a large open living space that’s flooded with light from floor to ceiling bifolds. The décor has modern-rustic feel, mixing clean white walls and sleek surfaces with brick and characterful wood flooring throughout. All outer walls are clad in timber, capturing a modern chalet look that complements the natural surroundings.
Builder Lee Pearce found Woodpecker through his local merchant Timber & Allied in Westbury, a stockist of Woodpecker floors. When the project reached the flooring stage, the Woodpecker rep. visited site to discuss the compatible options and present samples that C&L could take back to their client.
With a new concrete screed and underfloor heating, it was also key to check the subfloor was dry enough for the wood to be fitted. On a number of occasions, the Woodpecker rep visited to take moisture readings and provide technical advice, ensuring the environment was properly prepared for the fit.
“The rep was very helpful and came a number of times to take moisture readings. He recommended an interesting way to cover the expansion gap too – with rope.” – Lee
Harlech Rustic Oak was chosen for its traditional wood look, adding character and texture that balances the polished feel of the space. Where the floor meets brick, the expansion gap was uniquely finished with rope, adding bespoke detail.
“The flooring was very good to use and went down well. It’s one of the best we’ve used and we’ve tried a lot of timber floorings. It was well packaged, came on time and nothing was damaged. There wasn’t a single board we couldn’t use. And the adhesive worked well with the flooring, making it easy to lay. It looks great.” – Lee Pearce
