4 tips on hiring a contractor

Hiring a contractor is a difficult task and can be intimidating. We all want great quality with low prices but do you really get what you pay for? We have put together 4 tips to hiring a contractor

1. References, References, References

Do your homework! This is not an assignment you want to miss. Take it from the many, many homeowners that, in hindsight, wished they dug deeper on researching their contractor. Or at the very least, called a few verified customers for a reference. Now, as I say this, it is really sad that the fabulous contractors out there (and we personally know lots of them!) have to deal with the stigma of all the bad ones claiming to be a lot better than they are. Another great way to get a referral is, instead of using Google, try asking around your neighborhood or friends if they have someone they could recommend.

2. Your Budget, Their Price

Everyone says to do it, but we rarely get multiple bids. You know, the first company comes out and they seem so great, we go with them for their seasonal discount. Get the bids. It can be time-consuming and difficult to schedule, however, it is worth it in the long run. Once you get a few bids, don’t just take price as your deciding factor. Carefully go through the details to make sure you and the contractor are clear on what the project entails and don’t hesitate to ask questions.

3. Project Quality

What are your expectations? You and your contractor should be on the same page or at least the same book! If time and the situation allow, visit one of the contractor’s current or previous projects. When you call for references, don’t forget to ask about quality of work if you can’t visit a project. If the construction company has many employees, consider asking how often you will be meeting with the project manager or who will be your point of contact.

4. LBI? Legit?

Last but not least, make sure the company is registered with the state. They should be licensed, bonded and insured. Look up what contractors need to legally operate in your state and check online or call to confirm.
