Scandi Style Kitchen rooted in Neutral Maximalism

Flooring: Goodrich Natural Oak
Areas: kitchen, hallway, living areas
Supplier: Magnet
We spoke with the Head of Design at Magnet, Jen Nash, who has recently renovated her kitchen, and the results are stunning. With a naturally earthy colour pallet and wood accents throughout, it’s clear that every detail has been thought about.
Colour Scheme
Jen is an expert when it comes to kitchen design. Choosing a natural colour scheme, she has incorporated subtle greens, earthy tones, natural woods and rustic metals which creates, as Jen describes it, a “maximal minimalist” kitchen.
It’s known that nature lowers stress and creates a calm space. Using greenery and unfinished wooden cupboards, Jen makes sure natural features are at the core of the design.
Jen’s attention to detail is noticeable in the subtle brass metal taps and light holdings, avoiding the harsher and more modern silver and gold. Muted and warm, these subtle accents blend seamlessly with the design.
Flooring Choice
Often overlooked, an easy way to add nature to your home is through the flooring. Looking for woods that have knots, texture and a real oak finish, Jen’s flooring choice has created a beautiful connection between the earthy colours and the natural textures.
The textured wood floor gives the room a more authentic feel. Perfectly complimenting the earthy autumnal tones, Goodrich Natural Oak Herringbone is warm and inviting. Jen has softened the geometric herringbone pattern by adding subtle curved features, one of which we see in the rounded cupboard handles.
Lighting
In kitchen design, lighting has multiple functions and will turn a kitchen from a cooking area into a focal point of the home.
Creating ambience – Jen has chosen a combination of pendant lighting, wall lights and lamps to create two distinct areas. Pendant lights hang over the island which break up the two sides of the kitchen. Wall lights and lamps soften the perimeter and compliment the two seating areas.
Enhancing the design – The brass light switches perfectly complement the maximal minimalist look that Jen has created. Although small and seemingly inconspicuous, these subtle design accents work together to create something truly beautiful.
Easing functionality – The kitchen is often a hub of activity, so functionality is fundamental. Simply lighting specific areas like the island, the sink area and hob makes cooking cleaner, easier and safer.
Maximising natural lighting – open up your kitchen by allowing as much natural light in as possible. Keep window areas clean and tidy by avoiding obstructing tables or decor to create an atmosphere that feels welcoming.
Decor
Focusing on the little details, Jen has used woollen textured cushions, a throw that mimics grass and exposed shelving to add character. Exposed cooking ingredients on shelves and kitchen utensils like wooden chopping boards on the countertops gives the kitchen a cottage-like style and creates the perfect balance of design and functionality.
Having spent time in the Nordic sector, Jen has added a Scandinavian touch to her kitchen using muted and tonal shades. The elegant Scandi design meant Jen was able to use different patterns, maximalist furnishings and bold artwork, creating a beautiful balance between the two styles.
