WOOD FLOORING FAQS

These are the questions we get asked most often about our floors and their features.

Is solid wood flooring suitable for underfloor heating?

No – We would not advise using underfloor heating with solid wood flooring. This is because solid hardwood flooring tends to expand and contract more easily to changes in temperature and therefore they are not stable enough to deal with the temperature changes that underfloor heating will cause.

Does solid wood flooring need to acclimatise before being installed?

Yes – We recommend you let your solid wood floor acclimatise for 5 to 7 days before installing. This needs to be in the same room that it will be installed in, and it needs to remain within the sealed packaging. The sealed packaging helps ensure the floor doesn’t warp with the change of temperature from different environments. Do not store the flooring outdoors, in an outbuilding, or anywhere with damp or condensation problems.

Can I float York solid wood flooring?

No – York solid wood flooring can only be installed by either fully glueing it down, or by secret nailing it down.

What condition should the subfloor be in?

The surface immediately beneath a Woodpecker natural wood floor must be in good structural condition, free from damp rot, fungal or insect infestation, and contaminating residues. It must be flat with uneven areas not exceeding
3mm over a 2m area. Naturally, the surface should be vacuumed and totally free of debris before fitting begins. Hot pipes should be well insulated to prevent localised hotspots, which can cause wood flooring to warp or shrink.

What if I am installing over floor boards?

If installing over floorboards, ensure the voids beneath have a height of 600mm from the ground to the bottom side of the joists. We recommend using a suitable Woodpecker damp proof membrane to protect the floor from moisture. Check that the voids are vented around the perimeter and that these vents are positioned to allow air flow under the entire floor. As a rule of thumb, all venting should equal a minimum of 1.5% of the total m2 of the installation. Keep the vents open throughout the year too.

Is solid wood flooring suitable for bathrooms?

No – solid wood flooring is not suitable for bathrooms or wet-rooms. For waterproof flooring, view our Brecon range.

What is colour variation and how should I lay the planks with colour variation?

Colour variation is the natural beauty and variations in colour that occur in real wood.  To ensure the overall effect has a good balance of colour and details, take care to blend planks from several packs across the entire room.

What does 'pack includes random lengths' mean?

This means that your York floor will include multiple different lengths of floors within each pack, rather than boards of the same length. This is down to product availability as it is one solid piece of timber.

How thick is York flooring?

York is a solid piece of 18mm thick oak.

How much wastage do I need?

We generally recommend 10% wastage, however, this can be impacted by the room shape, laying style and other factors so always check with your installer first.

What joints do York planks have?

York flooring has tongue and groove joints.
